A special needs trust (SNT), sometimes referred to as a supplemental needs trust, is a legal vehicle enabling assets to be held on behalf of someone with disabilities without affecting their eligibility for means-tested public benefits such as Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income. It is critical to plan for the future when you are the parent of a child with a disability. Developing a plan can seem daunting but families need to plan before a crisis happens. The Special Needs Alliance has created a 15-step plan for developing a will for parents of children with disabilities.
